With better weather on the horizon, motorists need to be motorocycle-aware

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and next week, May 16 to the 22, will be Canada Road Safety Week.

The days are longer, the sun is shining and roads are dry, which means motorcycle riders will be sharing the road in greater numbers. All drivers should be looking, listening and ensuring they are safely sharing our roadways with motorcyclists.

Canada Road Safety Week is an enforcement-driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. The focus is on impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and driving without a seatbelt. This year’s theme is “Take the Wheel”.

Last year, government increased fines, demerit points and the number of days that a vehicle may be impounded for excessive speeding, street racing and stunting offences. Impaired driving fines have also gone up. Drivers should  practice safe and defensive driving, especially this upcoming Victoria Day weekend.
